How would you like to experience staying in a charming treehouse that is completely devoid of electricity but lights up with fireflies every night? Where there are no fans but is still cool because of never-ending sea breezes? If you book the Tatu treehouse on Chole Island at Tanzania, then you are one step there.
Built on top of rocks near the sea, Tatu is the absolute cabin for those seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life and go some place where they can simply get away from it all and gather their thoughts. Moreover, it is the perfect destination for those who want to spend some real quality time with their loved ones without disruptions from the outside world.
With technology almost completely taking over the world, it is rare to find a place where there's complete solitude and peace. However, on a remote island off the coast off Tanzania, there is such a spot. It's called Tatu.
This two-level cabin is like two separate houses that is connected by a simple staircase. The top one is perched on a tamarind tree while the other one is right above the beach over mangroves -- both of which have amazing views of the nearby beaches and distant grounds. And despite its lack of electricity, this treehouse is still very comfortable. It has double beds, a working toilet, and showers with a constant supply of hot water. It really is amazing.
What's worth mentioning also is that Tatu is run by a family who is very friendly and accommodating. They will really attend to your needs and even personally take you out to exciting adventures. In here, you will find the peace and relaxation you truly want.
How to get there
Reaching Tatu is quite easy. All you have to do is take a plane from virtually anywhere in Tanzania to Mafia Island and drive to Utende where the boat to Chole Mjini is docked. There are regular flights and boats so you won’t have to worry. Note though that since Tatu is located on an island that is in the middle of the Mafia Marine Park, you have to pay $10 per person upon entry.
About the area
Tatu is in the heart of the Mafia Island Marine Park which has breathtaking reefs and dive sites, thus, SCUBA diving is an activity you could try out anytime you wish to. And since owners Jean and Anne are both PADI Dive Masters and biologists, they can tailor dives specifically for you or your group and personally introduce you to the wonders that the sea around Chole Mjini offers. Besides SCUBA diving, there are hosts of other things you could experience around here as well. You can go snorkeling and turtle hatching; watch and swim with whale sharks; sunbathe and have picnics on the sandbar; island hop and sail into the sunset; or visit the nearby Chole Village and Popo Park. It’s amazing how much you can do even when there’s no electricity, right?
Chole Mjini is a treehouse beach lodge tucked into the small island of Chole centred in the Mafia Island Marine Park Tanzania. Activities are marine based with options for snorkelling, diving, swimming, sailing, SUPs, picnics and walks. Lounging, eating, birdwatching, reading all take you away from the modern world and bring back nature to your soul.

Simply superb treehouse holiday
This is one of those reviews you kinda hate to write - because you just know it's going to make it harder to get a reservation. Chole Mjini Lodge is outstanding. It's on a tiny island - very secluded - with great food - private activities - scuba - snorkeling and did I mention beautiful tree house rooms! The owners Jean and Anne De Villiers are warm and welcoming hosts. The only thing my wife and I didn't like - is that we eventually had to leave. I guide safari groups into East Africa and this by far my favorite lodge.

A treehouse holiday for the soul
Jean and Anne have created a haven on this historical tropical island that goes beyond the amazing accommodation, friendly staff and fun filled days. The immense work they continue to do for the community permeates into the relaxed atmosphere rarely found between tourist operator and local community. Our girls of 7 and 8 loved the week we spent here. Days filled with outdoor activities, fresh food and good company. A holiday for the soul. Pete & Monique
