Treehouse summary

All of us need a well-deserved break every now and then, especially when we've become so caught up in our daily routines. And what better place to do that than in a treehouse on a remote island without electricity and technology? Wouldn't that be amazing?

Fortunately for us, there is such a place. It is Tano, a cabin raised off the ground on stilts amidst 19th century ruins in Chole Island off the Tanzanian coast. This treehouse is simply splendid. It has a sense of solitude unsurpassed by many, continuous cool breezes from the sea, and stunning views of the island.

And since you'll have almost no contact to the outside world here, you'll get to really spend quality time with your companions. At the same time, the complete absence of modern-day distractions will let you enjoy nature like you never have before.

Treehouse description

Even if completely devoid of electricity, comfort is not hard to come by at Tano. And why should it be when the beds are soft and cozy; the open-air yet secluded bathing area is spacious and equipped with hot showers; and the toilet is new and working properly? In fact, life couldn't get any more relaxing than here -- and there are hundreds of people who can vouch for that.

Also, despite the absence of modern-day technology, its not hard find to things to do in this place. There are plenty. You can go sailing into the sunset, have dinner by candlelight, watch as turtle eggs hatch, or even swim with whale sharks! What's more, Tano is run by a family who is very friendly and hospitable. Not only will they serve you delicious fresh food, but also accompany you themselves to wherever you might want to go.

Truly, there is no place like Tano. So make sure you book it now before someone else does!

How to get there

Reaching Tano is quite easy. All you have to do is take a plane from virtually anywhere in Tanzania to Mafia Island and drive to Utende where the boat to Chole Mjini is docked. There are regular flights and boats so you won’t have to worry. Note though that since Tano is located on an island that is in the middle of the Mafia Marine Park, you have to pay $10 per person upon entry.

About the area

Tano is in the heart of the Mafia Island Marine Park which has breathtaking reefs and dive sites, thus, SCUBA diving is an activity you could try out anytime you wish to. And since owners Jean and Anne are both PADI Dive Masters and biologists, they can tailor dives specifically for you or your group and personally introduce you to the wonders that the sea around Chole Mjini offers. Besides SCUBA diving, there are hosts of other things you could experience around here as well. You can go snorkeling and turtle hatching; watch and swim with whale sharks; sunbathe and have picnics on the sandbar; island hop and sail into the sunset; or visit the nearby Chole Village and Popo Park. It’s amazing how much you can do even when there’s no electricity, right?

Hope to come back one day!

I absolutely loved our stay. My best friend and I go on a trip once a year and this year it was Africa. We went to Chloe in September between safaris and it was a perfect break. The treehouse we stayed in was 2-story so we each had our own space and views. The food was amazing--fresh fish for almost every meal. On 9/11 we walked through a Muslim community with Rajb, a native to Chloe. It was lovely. We stayed for 4 nights, snorkeling at mushroom rock, went to see the baby turtles released on Juani Island and went to a sandbar to lounge around. The owners were great--full of fun stories to share. This place would be perfect for a family reunion! I hope to go back one day and await their chef's recipe for banana chips! Hint hint!! Thanks for a fabulous adventure! Sarah

    My idea of heaven

Chole Mjini was a little slice of heaven for me. Lovely views over the trees to Chole Bay and watching beautiful birds all from the vantage point of my comfy bed was both relaxing and entertaining. The furnishings were beautiful, the food was good and service was attentive but not intrusive. The snorkelling was absolutely amazing and the dhow rides to and from snorkelling sites were a pleasure in themselves. Regarding the shower, usually I'm bit of a prude, but I thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor experience.

    Wonderful experience - wonderful treehouse

Myself and a friend spent 4 nights in one of the two-level tree-houses. What a wonderful experience. Interesting, entertaining hosts, attentive staff, beautiful location and the food...the food was fabulous! Fresh fish cooked to perfection every day!
Treat yourself to a totally relaxing stay!
